WWDC Day wrap-up and thoughts
Jun 08 2009 23:34 | 16 Comments
Luckily my worries from yesterday didn't come completely true. While Apple did obsess over the iPhone for over half of the show, they did also talk about Macs and Mac OS X. So, my thoughts on everything they covered at Today's conference.

Updated MacBooks
First of all, the prices on the MacBooks fell by quite a bit, they are now 3-400 dollars cheaper then they were yesterday, and thats with the updated specs, so if you're comparing them spec wise to the previous generation, they will actually be 5-600 dollars cheaper on average. Awesome.
Second of all, the 15" MacBook Pro. Now has a non-removable battery just like the 17 inch model. Of course at the expense of the battery being sealed away, you get an additional 2 hours of battery life, so also yay. Quite a few people are still whining about not being able to swap out the battery whenever they want, but honestly, when was the last time you changed the battery in your laptop? - I don't mean changed it because it was time to replace it, but just because you used up the charge. Honestly, how many people actually carry around spare batteries at all times just in case? In my current MacBook Pro, which I owned for over 2 years now, I only once had to replace the battery, and that was because the old one blew the hell up. ^_^;
Third, the 13" aluminum MacBook received a Firewire 800 port and was rebadged as a MacBook Pro. Personally don't really care much for it because I can't use such a small screen for the work I need to do. However if I would do less of the said work, would most definitely get it, wonderful little machine it is.
Finally the 13" and 15" MacBook Pros got a dedicated SD card slot. I must say I quite like this and wish the 17" model also had it.

Snow Leopard
YAY! Yay damnit yay! Very very exciting news here. If Apple's lab tests are to be believed (that isn't to say I don't trust them, but lab tests are always full of shit from any company), Snow Leopard will be WAY faster.
Apple claims that 90% of the whole OS was completely rewritten to take advantage of the latest CPUs and GPUs and so on and so forth. Won't bore you with any charts or other technical crap, but to sum it all up, everything is cleaner, shinier and more polished. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Safari 4
After months of being beta, Safari 4 is finally out for both Mac and Windows. It's snappy. Can't really say much beyond that. The tabs were moved back to the bottom as they were before, which I hate - so much wasted space! And the Windows version is still ugly as sin. When using OS X I use Safari 99% of the time as its hands down the best browser for this system. When I'm using Windows however, I rarely use anything which isn't Google Chrome which I absolutely adore.

iPhone 3G S
'S' is for 'Speed'. Basically, faster all around while costing the same as the old one. The old/regular iPhone 3G is now 99 USD. In terms of body, is identical, which is a bit of a disappointment, was hoping for something new and pretty.
iPhone OS 3.0
Been using it for a few month now, nothing has changed since it was shown off back in March. Its... good. Works stable, haven't had any problems with it. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. Just installed the Gold Master build on my iPod Touch a few minutes ago, all is jolly. If you have any questions concerning it, feel free to ask.
Apple.com/iPhone
Basically thats all. If you have a few hours to kill, a video of the keynote is available over at Apple's website. Enjoy.

Joe
The digs at Windows 7 made me laugh "Windows 7 is just the same old Vista with a few tweaks, now heres our new OS which is just the same old Leopard but improved".
Michael Flux
@Joe, heh, yeah, a bit of irony there :p - but to be fair, unless they're full of it, they did rewrite most of it... even if the outcome is the same, on the surface at least :p
blauereiter
It was a little disappointing that Steve Jobs didn't turn up, but the new Macbooks are very, very tempting indeed. :]
Michael Flux
@blauereiter, Yeah, rumors are he'll maybe come back later in the month to unveil something even more exciting - so should be interesting to see if that plays out :D
Smithy
Don't really have the need for a laptop or new computer but those MacBooks are looking more tempting every day...

I'm with you there. Really liked having the tabs on top. It just feels more natural. I think the biggest announcement (well kept secret?) were the Macs. And the price of snow leopard! Will be available in Sept, a month before Win7, and it's dirt cheap! Can't wait to hear my snow leopard purrrrrrr. ^^
Joe
@k,
well Win7 goes RTM in the summer, don't know how easy it will be to get though.
julio
@k, i didn't like at all the tabs on top... dunno just used to the tabs on firefox

good stuff man! digging the new OSX as well can't wait!! and sure made me felt good about actually buying leopard before!! Now i get the $29 upgrade!! YAY!!!
Moign Khawaja
Impressive work Michael especially with the graphics. Do you not fear Apple will haunt you for publishing Snow Leopard's inside info? What about the NDA? Very brave thing you've done for us Mac OS X worshippers. Bravo!
Michael Flux
@Moign Khawaja, Lets say the reward was better then the threat :) Thanks. :)
