Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 01

You know, it really is quite amazing just how much you can get simply by being nice to others. During the time I was at the resort, I obviously encountered quite a few people, some of them were quite pleasant, but the vast majority were... umm, I don't want to say worthless pricks but I really can't think of a better way to describe them.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 02

Now, that is not to say they weren't nice to each other or to me. Generally speaking they were, but just the way a lot of them treated the employees at the resort, was absolutely disgusting. Ok, look, I understand, you're paying a large amount of money to go to a resort like this and you expect to be treated like a king or a princess, but do you really have to act like a complete ass?

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 03

But anyway, enough about the bad, lets talk about the good, lets talk about me! Lets talk about how while others were busy getting drunk and throwing up on each other, I, got a chance to see a freakin sea turtle!

As I said at the beginning, it really is quite amazing how nice others will be to you if you're nice to them. While I was shooting all the photos which you saw in the Night Shoot 2 post, one of the security guards quietly came up to me and told me that a sea turtle was in the process of laying eggs about 500 meters from where I was. Could he have told this to any of the other 50+ people that were in that immediate area? Of course - but why did he chose to tell me? Simply because of all those people, I was the only one who wasn't an ass. ^_^

And within just a few minutes, there I was. To sum up my thoughts, "holy hell this thing is huge", at least compared to all the regular turtles which I have encountered before.

Obviously because taking any photos I had to quietly wait until the turtle finished laying its eggs so it wouldn't get scared and run away back into the ocean.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 05

Actually this was the first of the two turtles that I saw that night, but this was the only one which laid its eggs, the other just walked around for a few minutes, didn't like something and quickly ran away.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 06

Was quite surprised at how fast they can move on land with just their flippers - certainly faster then regular turtles can move with legs.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 07

Seems like this one was quite tired as on the way back to the ocean it was stopping every 5-10 meters to rest for a few minutes.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 08

If anyone is wondering why it has so much sand on its back, its because it was first digging up then nest where the other eggs were, and then was burying it again. Obviously can't do something like that neatly when all you have to operate with are flippers. So just a suggestion - if you ever get a chance to see a turtle laying its eggs, stay back. Otherwise you'll be covered in sand.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 09

As the turtle disappeared back into the ocean, I helped the guard put up all the barriers that the turtle destroyed as it was going to its nest and then back back to shooting more photos.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 10

So, what's the moral of this story? Well, as much as I don't want to sound like your 3rd grade teacher, but... Treat others like you want to be treated! I'm sincerely amazed just how many people don't get something so damn simple.

Mexico 2009 - Sea Turtle 11

And that's the way it is.

F me that is huge. I dunno i am kinda scared of animals, not sure if I would go too close to it. You need to take 2 cameras with you, one to take photos and one to make movies!

    Michael Flux

@Prometheus, But then I would also need 4 hands :p But hey, next time I go somewhere, I'd love for you to join me and do all the video shooting - ^_^ I quite enjoyed those photos and videos you posted of Hong Kong :)

And come on, other then this thing taking your hand off with one bite, what's the worst that can happen :p

  2. chun

Oh wow that's amazing! Poor turtle, laying 500 over eggs must be so darn tiring! :O And I agree with the moral of your story :)

    Michael Flux

@chun, Well, I sure wouldn't want be lay 500 eggs - I can tell ya that much! :D And yes, if only everyone else agreed... :p

  3. Tibul

Excellent, always wanted to see a sea turtle big fan of wildlife so would be great.

    Michael Flux

@Tibul, Yeah and its one thing seeing one just swimming around in the water next to a coral where you'd expect to see it while on some orchestrated tour - something else to see it completely in the wild doing its own thing :)

  4. Moign Khawaja

Absolutely agree with you master Flux! Honestly, I like the way you enjoyed your trip. I would have done the same if I were in your shoes. This whole notion of holiday seems to be marred by drunken orgies and other crap like that. Fun can be had without getting drunk or hanging out with hot asses! Nice one mate!

    Michael Flux

@Moign Khawaja, Mmmmm drunken orgies with hot asses...

    I kid, I kid :p

  5. dans

I absolutely agree on you with that. People tend to forget about the basic thing.
It looks like you are very lucky with animals. You managed to get a lot of interesting photos of animals.

    Michael Flux

@dans, Heh, yes indeed. I 'dunno, its kinda weird, I really love taking photos of animals, but taking photos of people... I wouldn't say hate it, but its not my favorite thing int the world lets say :p

  6. Heferkimbo

Ok..... i will tell you why he told you, and it is something i noticed by reading your posts about your trip to mexico.. i noticed that you had "healthy vacations".... i mean, you didn't come to mexico to get drunk... You just spend your time there doing what you like... and he could see that, and im sure you are a nice guy in person, and the staff could see that in you, and i bet, they will remember you for long time!

    Michael Flux

@Heferkimbo, Well my view on drinking while on vacations is along the lines of, you can get drunk while you're at home for 500x cheaper, and if you need to be constantly drinking while on the vacation to "have a better time" then maybe there is something wrong with that vacation of yours because isn't "having a good time" the whole point of it in the first place. I really never drink at all, but especially during a time like this, drinking seems like such a waste of time and energy...

  7. AidanH

I love sea turtles, so jealous you got to see one up close! If only more people did just treat people the way they'd like to be treated though, I've seen the kind of behavior you described at resorts and it just makes me angry. Very glad you had a fun and productive holiday, and as Heferkimbo says - you didn't just go to get drunk!

    Michael Flux

@AidanH, Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying "productive" - but yeah, it wasn't bad at all ^_^ and thanks.

  8. Santa

This really is a wonderful post, that's amazing that you got to see that. I agree, people really do need to learn how to respect others. Either way, great shots, as always, can't wait to see the next post. =)

    Michael Flux

@Santa, Thanks as always Santa ^_^

  9. Smithy

Nice photos of that sea turtle, must have been amazing to see. ^^

Absolutely right on how to treat people, besides, one's own life will be that much happier and brighter by being a nice and cheerful person.

    Michael Flux

    @Smithy, Yup, just gotta be careful not to become too bright and blind others with your magnificence - then people just get jealous and things get nasty ^_^;

  10. Coco the Bean

Wow what a huge turtle! Must have been quite the experience.

Heh, "Treat others as you want to be treated" is such a darn simple idea and so many people can't manage to do so. xD But karma catches up to everyone. :P

    Michael Flux

@Coco the Bean, ...and when it does, just sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch the fireworks ^_^

  11. Seantaku

ZOMG! Amazing photos!!! I am a huge animal lover and to witness something so amazing like you just did is a dream of mine.

Thank you for sharing the experience!!

    Michael Flux

@Seantaku, Heh, glad I'm not the only animal lover around here, and yeah, glad I have someone to share all of this with - seriously so much nicer having a site where I can post my photos. I mean compared to before where all my photos just sad on my computer doing nothing and me being the only one who ever saw them. I think sometime down the road I may start posting some of my photos from years ago also, may as well share those also ^_^
