Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 2
Jul 21 2009 19:45 | 29 Comments
Another day, another night shoot. It's actually quite funny, before this, I never before tried during long exposures of 'nature'. All the time it was just the generic photos w/ some car lights here and there, for example take a look at the 'January 5th Night Shoot - Part 1' post. I do however quite love my 'Polar Lights 2' photo - probably is one of my favorite long exposure photos that I ever took. But yeah, was actually quite amazed just how nicely the photos turned out in the first night shoot, so I decided to go back again to take some more photos.
At a dollar per minute, you can get a nice massage. Didn't try it personally, but people who did seemed quite pleased. Don't really like these beds too much as its quite hard to get any sleep on them. You just fall asleep, turn around and fall off onto the ground.
I did manage to get 1-2 hours of sleep on these beds however. If you've never slept on the beach, give it a try, quite nice actually. Fresh air, good soundtrack, wind blowing away all the mosquitoes... ^_^
Wasn't really an ideal night for shooting the sky as there were a few clouds up there. Wouldn't be too bad if I was shooting at higher ISOs and shutter speeds, but given that I was shooting at ISO 80 and 60 second exposure the clouds just ended up looking smudged. Though does look at bit like an aurora I think, don't you?
Next time I find myself in a place such as this, with a clear sky and a ton of stars, really should bring a dSLR to get some nice photos of star trails over a few hours.
Everything is so nice and calm without herds of tourists covering the sand. The smudged floating thing on the water was a floating pyramid-like thing with some steps on it. Just floats there all day long and kids are climbing all over it - occasionally falling over, flying head-first into the water, hitting a rock or a coral and running away in tears. Dare I say, har har har! :D
Played quite a bit of volleyball (during the day obviously) while I was there. Before that, haven't played in 3-4 years - but like riding a bike, comes back to you very quickly. Definitely one of my favorite sports. I would say for me, it shares the number 1 spot with football (real football, not the American hand-egg version) and hockey.
Once again, the moon is as bright as the sun. ^_^
Really have to be careful when shooting right next to the water. I don't mean careful in terms of not getting your camera wet, but just careful in how you position the tripod as when a wave comes it tends to wash out some sand from one of the legs and then if the shutter is still open, that photo is basically ruined.
Before this, the biggest hermit crabs I ever saw were maybe a cm long. These ones were quite huge, some as big as 7cm in length.
Met a few interesting people during the course of this week. For example these two from Texas, miss Ally (or however you spell it) and mr. DJ (or however he spells that). Was expecting the stereotypical texan accent... didn't get it. Sigh...
This crab took forever to come out of its shell. Was waiting for maybe 15 minutes.
But at least while waiting for the crab met this couple from Chicago, quite nice people also.
In the time I spent talking to them, the crab not only came out of its shell, but almost managed to run away. Not so fast! - at least not until I take some photos.
Now I just felt silly. Just a few days back I was chasing raccoons around the whole resort at night... Turns out I could've just waited and they would come to me.
Must be nice being an animal and living around a resort like this - always access to a bunch of food.
They like nachos it seems!
And with hands covered in cheese, time to run away.
A few guys from the bar. One in the flowery shirt claims to have come from Colombia.
The chef for the night. Also seems like having the flash reflect from a stainless-steel table, isn't exactly the best way of making people look happy. :p
One of the beautiful girls who work at the resort.
Some Scottish figure who was waiting for beer. Was actually very surprised by how many Europeans were at that resort. Mostly Spanish, but quite a bit of people from England and Scotland also. Not sure what is it about the Scottish accent, but I just love listening to it.
On the other side of the bar.
More blurry clouds.
Pool glowing at night.
The previous cook goes to sleep around 12, and from midnight, to about 7:30, he's replaced by this guy. Both of these guys are quite awesome actually. ^_^
Climbed to the top one of the few lifeguard towers for a nice view. By now the wind was so strong that the floating pyramid tipped over and was floating on its side.
Looking in the other direction from the tower.
Another security guard. Next post will be awesome, to sum it up, freakin' huge sea turtle on the beach!

Very cool! I like the night shots you were able to get. I hope to be able to visit the place someday soon. ; )
Michael Flux
@Mike Grace, Heh, if you do, tell the guys at the bar that I said 'hi' ~_^
Mike Grace
@Michael Flux, Will do! I'll see if I can get some good photos while I'm at it.
Prometheus
wow, so many sick pics. Which cam did you use? You said the LX3 is good for macro shots right? How many hours did it take for you to get all these pics?
Michael Flux
@Prometheus, Well, all of these I shot between 11 and 2 at night, and well, I posted maybe half of the ones I took so not too long. But yeah, the LX3 is great at macros. Really its quite good at anything that doesn't require zooming - as it the zoom is only 3x. Also I wouldn't recomend it for portraits as the wide angle lens can have some very nasty looking stretching on the sides (or top and bottom when taking vertical photos). But well, can't have it all. Overall I like it alot ^_^

Columbia or Colombia ..... ?... : P great images as usuall...!!.... hey.. i was wondering, are you living in the states? or japan.. when you said not for long, you meant your going back to japan?... Did you learn any japanese the time you spend there? ...
Michael Flux
@Heferkimbo, Err, Colombia, sorry, typo ^_^; fixed it. At the moment, I'm in the States until I can get some things taken care of. Wasn't originally planning on them taking so long, but well, not really much I can do to speed them up, so until something changes w/ them, I'm kinda stuck here for now.
But yeah, I defiantly want to go back to Japan, can't even express just how much I love it there, such an amazing place. And yeah, a bit, though not as much as I hoped as I spent too much time dicking around and not enough time studying :p But still even while living here, studying bit by bit albeit, very very slowly. :(
Moign Khawaja
All great pics Michael. Respect you more for the 'football' statement. What we play is the real football, played all over the world, and stands as world's most favourite sport! Cheers!
Michael Flux
@Moign Khawaja, hahah, yeah :p As I gained your respect I bet I just lost a couple American visitors :p
Moign Khawaja
@Michael Flux, All for the love of the 'beautiful game'... ;)
Heferkimbo
@Moign Khawaja, Futbol (spanish) is the BEST sport... most passionate and adictive!!.. each gol is so precious that it must be celebrated like you won the lotery!!.. whet the point of sport where the usual scores are 123 - 117 ???... what the point and fun of screaming and celebrating each 1 or 2 minutes?? no joy there!!.
Thats why in mexico we call call the gol, "his majesty" : ) .. LOL, ok, not mexico, just the guy who talks during the futbol match on TV, but he is right....
Moign Khawaja
@Heferkimbo, Very true! Watching La Liga action on TV and seeing Spanish teams advancing in Champions League is great. Always enjoyed seeing Mexico doing well in World Cup. What is the situation now? Is your team through to World Cup 2010?
Heferkimbo
@Heferkimbo, : ( im not sure mexico can go to the world cup.. mexico is usually bad, but the past year it does really suck!!... BIG TIME.. 4 coaches in 1 year.. they really need find a solution!!
Jamaipanese

Heferkimbo
OHH !!.. i was looking at your images again... wishing i could go to cancun sometime soon.. and then i realized something!!!!!.... the fourth image from the bottom, with the 2 guys that you said are "quite awesome actually", i noticed that one of them has very short hair, but wearing a hairnet!!..funny..HOTEL policy perhaps?..
yonasu
@Heferkimbo, I noticed that as well O_o Do you have any idea why he's wearing a hairnet even though he doesn't have much hair Michael? It looks silly...
Smithy
Nice nighttime shots. I should try my hand at some but I'm always asleep around that time so... むりむり
chun
I think I saw the huge turtle photos on your flickr! :P I think I might have saw a photo with U in it? (not sure tho)
Michael Flux
@chun, Yups ^_^; Just before I can put the post up, I have to first upload the photos and so there is a slight delay between them being uploaded and the post going up. Problem is that I can't set them to private and then to public as that will screw up the URLs so... yeah, I'm kinda forced to reveal them a few minutes before the post goes up :p But anyway, the finished post is here: http://michaelflux.com/mexico-2009-sea-turtle

Some time ago, I really needed to buy a house for my business but I didn't earn enough cash and couldn't buy anything. Thank God my comrade proposed to get the credit loans from trustworthy creditors. Hence, I acted that and used to be satisfied with my student loan.
