How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10A380 01

Within the last 24 hours of me posting the previous article with a bunch of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, build 10A380 screenshots, I have gotten a small ton of messages from people via Twitter direct messages, Facebook, iChat and email asking me for how to install Snow Leopard. As I just don't have the time to explain everything step by step to every single person individually, I decided to write up this brief walkthrough on what to do.

How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10A380 02

Step 1: First of all, obviously you need to acquire the .DMG (disk image) file. If you are an Apple Developer Connection Premiere, or Select member, you can download the .DMG file directly from Apple's Developer Connection website.

If you know of any ways to get it otherwise, please do not post any links as I will be forced to remove them. I don't care if you're talking among yourselves on the subject but please keep it to a minimum.

Step 2: With this .DMG file you can do one of two things. You can either, burn it to a dual layer DVD (thats the 8.5GB kind - you need it because the .DMG won't fit on a standard 4.7GB DVD) and from there proceed to install it like you would usually install an OS when you bought it in a store. OR you can install it directly from a hard drive. I personally prefer the second method, but will explain both.

Step 3a: If you choose to go down the the DVD-burning route, you need to do the following. First of all, open Disk Utility, which can be found under /Applications/Utilities/, click on the yellow 'Burn' icon in the toolbar, find and select the .DMG file and click 'Burn'. Now just wait a few minutes until the disk is burned and verified and after that is done, you're ready to proceed to Step 4.

Step 3b: Now, I personally much prefer using this method when installing new operating systems. Not only are you not wasting the relatively expensive dual layer DVDs, but also with this method the installation time can be cut down in half. What you need is an external USB or Firewire hard drive which you can use "instead" of the DVD during your installation. A usb stick/thumb drive will also work as long as its large enough to fit the .DMG file. Before proceeding, back up any data you have on the external hard drive as you will now format it and in turn erase everything.

When you're done backing up anything you had on the external hard drive, open Disk Utility just like in Step 3a, select your external hard drive from the list in the sidebar, click on the 'Erase' tab, from the drop down menu select 'Mac OS Extended Journaled' and click 'Erase'.

After you erased the external hard drive, click on the 'Partition' tab, and from the drop down menu under 'Volume Scheme' select '1 Partition'*. Now click on the 'Options' button and form there, select 'GUID Partition Table'. This will allow you to boot from the hard drive you're currently preparing.

How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10A380 05

* One note I must make is that if this external hard drive is large enough (30GB or more) you can not only use it for the Installer, but also to install Snow Leopard onto it and then boot directly from this hard drive and use it as you would use your internal one if you were to install an OS on it.

If you do want to do this, simply select '2 Partitions' from the drop down menu, and resize one of them to 10GB, this will be the partition used for the Installer, the rest of the hard drive will be dedicated to the operating system itself.

After you're done with all of the above, click 'Apply' and wait for Disk Utility to properly partition your hard drive.

Now click on the 'Restore' tab. Locate your .DMG file and drag it onto the 'Source' field, either from within Disk Utility, or from Finder. From the sidebar grab the partition you prepared for the installer and drag it to the 'Destination' field. Check the 'Erase destination' checkbox and click 'Restore'. Thats it. Now sit back, and wait for the process to finish.

Step 4: Now its time to boot up. No matter which direction you went in in step 3, what you need to do now is the following. Shut down and power on or restart your Mac. Right after you hear the startup chime, before the Apple logo appears on the screen, press and hold the 'alt' key. Keep holding it until the icons for your hard drives (and optical media, if inserted) appear on the screen. From here select either the disk which you just burned or the hard drive to which you just restored the .DMG. Now that you've selected and clicked one one of the choices, wait for the Installer to boot and then follow the directions which are, I think, quite self explanatory.

For some photos of the the installer, please see my Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10A380: Part 1 Installation post

Thanks for looking and if you have any questions about any part of the process, feel free to ask.

    Hey,

Thanks for all the screenshots. much appreciated. I like your desktop images a lot, could you tell me where to find them?

    Thanks,

    Hobbes

    Jeremy Brown

@Hobbes, the second one he got from http://sarahbethlewis.blogspot.com/ [he mentioned the blog the post about the SL screenshots in directing people to yet another great desktop image].

    Michael Flux

@Hobbes, And to add to what Jeremy Brown has said, the first one you can find over at http://www.sgeier.net/fractals/index07.php :)

Thank you for this small walkthrough that comes very handy to me.
Where is the fisrt desktop wallpaper from?

    Nikkin

  3. abiem

    Yes!! absolutely love your wallpaper!
Also...what's that icon right of ichat it looks so cute! and also the icon left of quicktime..wut app is that?

    thanks!!!

    Jeremy Brown

@abiem, the icon to the left of quicktime is http://colloquy.info/ [it's an IRC client]. I'm not sure what the teddy bear icon is.

    Aaron T.

@Jeremy Brown, The teddy icon is a custom Adium icon methinks.

    Michael Flux

@abiem, Yup! Jeremy Brown and Aaron T. are correct about both Colloquy and Adium!

The Adium icon you can find at http://tinyurl.com/lz42lg Very cute indeed :)

The wallpaper you can find over at http://www.sgeier.net/fractals/index07.php Quite a few great wallpapers there :)

  4. Aaron T.

    Hey, I'm aaront from #habari.

I know it's been said before, but that "celestial" wallpaper is impressive.

  5. Bill

I have a question , where did you get that awesome wallpaper as well, the celestial one.

  6. Gilbert Palau

    Mike;

Could you put the link to that celestial background?

    Looks awesome...

  7. Gilberto Palau

    Michael;

After I installed 10380A, I notice one thing. It doesnt put my main drive on the desktop. Is there a new setting for this?

    Michael Flux

@Gilberto Palau, Actually its in the same place it has always been, just its disabled by default for some reason. If you go to Finder and from the Finder menu go to Preferences, under 'General', if you check 'Hard Disks' that will show them on the desktop.

Its actually been there since Panther, but for some reason people never consider the Finder as an "app" and therefore don't ever look at the preferences and options it has. ^_^

  8. Jon Hendry

Are you violating your NDA? If you got this at WWDC, you are.

    Michael Flux

@Jon Hendry, Hmm? I'm just posting installation instructions which work for any version of OS X, including the currently shipping 10.5 Leopard. -_^ :)

  9. filip

Thanks, everything seems to be working fine except for mail. It doesn't start up, 'mail not responding' syndrome. Any advice on what to do?
    thx

  10. Martin

    Hi.

I'm about to buy my first macbook pro (so excited! *snigger*) and I was wondering.

Obviously before doing an update of ANY o.s. you have the files/settings all backed up.

I take it nothing is wiped? It is an update not a new OS.
    sorry for being so noobish...

    Michael Flux

@Martin, Well, its a new OS, but you can upgrade without wiping anything out and with all your files and applications intact. :)

  11. Nicklas

Thanks for the guide!! I just have one question. Is there any way you can install the 10.6 update WITHOUT deleting everything on the drive, like you can do when you go from tiger to leopard? Or is there no other way but to delete everything and doing a clean install?

    Thanks!

    Michael Flux

@Nicklas, Sorry, didn't really explain what I meant clearly enough, what I meant is yes, you can do an upgrade, but you need to erase the *external* hard drive so you can use it as something to put the DMG on when you're booting, *if* you're going with the hard drive method instead of the DVD one.

  12. Aaron T.

Question: Which version of Python does it run? I'm hoping 2.6 :)

    Michael Flux

    @Aaron T., One better, 2.6.1 :D

  13. Nicklas

Do you have the answer for my question, mr. Flux?

  14. Nicklas

Will this work if I restore a CDR file to a HDD instead of a DMG?

    Michael Flux

@Nicklas, Yeah, it should work, however you *may* need to first to 'Scan Image For Restore' because you are able to restore it. You can find that option under the 'Images' menu in Disk Utility.

  15. Nicklas

Okay, that makes sense :) Thank you Michael, it's very kind of you! Do you know if this will work with a cdr file instead of a dmg?

  16. Dan Buchan

Here's a method that doesn't need Disk Utility (aside from erasing a FW drive):

    1. find a FireWire drive you can erase
    2. use Disk Utility erase/partition according to the instructions above
    3. open a Terminal window, and type:

asr -source /path/to/disk/image.dmg -target /Volumes/Name-of-FireWire-drive --noverify

and hit Return. You may have to 'su root' before you issue the asr command. This will clone the DVD image to your FireWire drive.

    4. when cloning is complete, rename the FireWire drive to "Mac OS X Install DVD", then boot from it and install as normal.

If you don't rename the drive to "Mac OS X Install DVD", your install may start OK, but it will probably crap out at the very end (this happened to me). Renaming the FW drive did the trick.

  17. jesse james

It`s working, thanks for your manuel!

  18. Jason Anderson

I'm tempted to try it out. But I'm not sure if I want to wait 3 months and be surprised or spoil myself now.

Phil did say it was a "near finished" version. What are they working on at Apple HQ for these last three months? Just optimization?

  19. Jared Digby

Can I archive the beta & install the final version or update?

    Michael Flux

@Jared Digby, Yes, I'm guessing you'll be able to do that no problem.

  20. Johnny

What if I dont have a DVD DL burner on my mac neither an external HD???
Can I burn the .DMG image on a pc that does have a DVD DL burner?

    Michael Flux

@Johnny, Yeah, shouldn't be a problem, a few apps out there for Windows which let you burn DMGs. Just search for 'burn dmg windows' in Google or wherever, and you'll get a ton of results.

  21. Michael Duke

    Hi, Michael,

I came across your blog by doing a Google for 'install snow leopard 10a380'. I'm having a bit of trouble, and I wondered if I could ask you a few questions?

None of the previews that I have obtained will install, Including 10a380. I'm installing them on to clean HDs, and I'm sure that they are set up to be GUID partitioned. However the installers simply copy a lot of files to the hard drives (this process takes a few minutes, not the 35-40 minutes stated by the installer), then the computer restarts, there is the '?' Icon on startup for a split second, then it restarts in my normal copy of leopard.

Any ideas what is going on?

    TIA,

    Michael Flux

@Michael Duke, When you restart, press and hold the alt key right after the chime, there you'll see all the possible bootable partitions. From there, if you select your new installation, does it still show you the '?' symbol?

Also, did you install it from a DVD or HD?

  22. Michael Duke

    Thanks, Michael --

That's the trouble... there is no installation -- just a load of .mpkg's copied to a folder called 'MacOS X Install Data'...? Installed from a DVD.

    Michael Flux

@Michael Duke, Hmm... weird. well, I don't know then... sounds like your DMG was just possibly screwed from the get-go.

  23. Michael Duke

    Got it, finally!

After a bit of rooting round, someone told me to try this from the Terminal:

    open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg

That did the trick...don't know why, but still...

    bamdad

    @Michael Duke,
Hi Michael. im having the same problem with 10A432 i have burned the dmg to a DL DVD but during the upgrade after 20% the installer tends to restart my laptop and i end up with the "?" folder flashing in my face. i have tried holding down the alt key but i only get to choose between my old leopard and my ubuntu. i also tried booting from the DVD using the startup disk in system prefrences but that ends up with the "?" as well. i suspect that the problem is that i cant boot from the DVD. i have checked my leopard disk and my laptop has no problem booting from that DVD. i also tried your solution but it doesnt find the files on the DVD. so, any ideas what i could do? o and one more question, is 10A432 the final build? or is it a developer preview version?

  24. Johnny

Hey Michael thanks for this step by step I use the HD method to install a fresh copy of Leopard and it worked flawlessly.

But I have a question why people keep trying to install Snow if what I hear was that it will only worked until June 30 which is already past????

    Michael Flux

@Johnny, I don't have a clue where people are getting that information from - maybe, maybe one of the earlier betas had some time limit on them, but given that we just got a new update yesterday... well, I can confirm that it still all works because I'm using it this very second.

  25. John Luarca

How do you assess the new updates to Snow Leopard in terms of stability, software compatibility, performance, etc? Is it, even in beta, good to be used as a main OS?

    Michael Flux

@John Luarca, Hey, sorry for the late reply, didn't see your comment... Well, I've been using it as the primary OS on my main work machine, every day since WWDC, and so far it has been excellent. Few very minor bugs here and there, but overall its as good if not better then the current release of 10.5 in terms of stability. In terms of performance it absolutely destroys Leopard and so far I haven't experience incompatibilities with any major applications - just a few small third party apps which don't work but nothing major.

  26. Ahmet

You are the MAAAAAANNNN !!!! Thanx a lot...!

  27. sebby.peek

Mr Flux, I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade OS 10.5 to 10.6 without deleting prior data?

Only reason I want to know this is due to the fact that I have a lot of movies and what not on my macbook's hard drive already.

Also, I want to delete my Ubuntu partition on my original hard drive, I have come across countless blogs which tell other people to use the Disk Utility, but for some reason this is not the case for me, any ideas?

    Cheers, Seb.

    Michael Flux

@sebby.peek, Yes, as with all versions prior to this one, you'll be able to do an update without any problems. If anything this will be the best update yet as it will actually reduce the footprint of the OS, so yeah, shouldn't be any problems for you there.

Now, what do you mean 'its not the case for you' - do you mean that partition doesn't show in in Disk Utility, or...?

    sebby.peek

@Michael Flux, Once I have downloaded the User Dvd and such, am I able to boot up the Dvd itself whilst in Leopard as an update?

The Linux problem is all done, I booted up the Ubuntu LiveCD and used GParted,
    so all good.

    Thanks again, Seb.

  28. Guillaume

It saved my day ! Thanks a lot !

  29. Woodwarrior

    Mr. Flux:

I have installed S L to a usb drive without a problem using my iMac, however, I cannot get that drive to boot. If I plug it into my Macbook it boots without a problem. Both machines are new, less than a year old and have the same speed and ram. Any guesses ?

    Thanks.

  30. shabooty

thank you for the tutorial :)

  31. Chiamera

Hey I got through the installation with the image file on an external hard drive. Everything worked fine untill the installation was finished and the reboot came up.

After the reboot the screen just went blank and I don't get anywhere. I only hear the startup sound and thats it.

    Do you have any suggestions?

  32. cal

    Dear Michael

i am having a hard time burning the dual layer disc. this will be my third time burning using disc utility. also you never mentioned the boot disc method for dvd. do i just press c when i restart or still use your method of pressing alt?

    cal

Michael, I managed to just install without booting from disc. I have an external dvd drive which I just used to directly install on Leopard without restarting. Amazing :D

I was wondering, I have other computers which have TIger system. Can I directly install Snow Leopard on these machines? They are intel based as well.

    Tim Welborn

@cal, The internal Pioneer DVD drive on my MacMini won't read DVDs for some reason...so, I have tried to install from my external USB Sony DL DVD drive. It goes through the entire install proceedure, then reboots. When I look at About this Mac, I'm still running 10.5.8.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  33. Ahmet ISIK

Thank you. Great how-to. I've lost 2 dual layer dvd's before coming to your how to. Wish I had seen it earlier

    cal

    @Ahmet ISIK,

you mean you didn't use the dual dvd option anymore?

    cal

    @Ahmet ISIK,

you mean you didn't use the dual dvd option anymore?

  34. absorbation

Thank you very much for this post. I'm all ready to install the GM build however, I'm worried about installing it successfully using Disk Utility to use a dual layer disk.

    Michael Flux

@absorbation, Well, as long as you have everything backed up, no worries :p

  35. Russ

Dude, thank you so much.. You rock

  36. thaimac

can this upgrade install not a clean install

    Michael Flux

@thaimac, Yup, not at all a problem.

  37. Yassin

when i try to use disk utility to burn the image to an external hard drive i have an error message "Restore Failure - Could not validate source - resource temporarily unavailable"
    is there any solution :S

    Michael Flux

@Yassin, Before trying to restore the image to the external hd, in disk utility try to select your dmg file, and then go to the Images menu - from there click "Scan image for restore" - that may solve your problems but I'm not entirely sure. Let me know if it helps.

    Kenneth

@Michael Flux, I have the same problem too! I don't know what next I can do now, struggling right there lol. You have any method the solve this issue?

    Anonymous

@Kenneth, @Michael Flux, i solved this problem by using Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the disk image to the external hd, every thing went right after that.

    Yassin

@Kenneth, @Michael Flux, i solved this problem by using Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the disk image to the external hd, every thing went right after that.

    Kenneth

@Yassin, can you install it successfully then?

    Kenneth

@Yassin, can you install it successfully then?

    Yassin

@Kenneth, yes the installation was successful, try this solution and till me how it went with you

  38. Derek

After I finish "restoring" the .DMG file to my new partition, I get the error “Could not restore – permission denied." This is after I waited the 25 minutes. I followed the instructions perfectly. This has happened several times.

Anybody know what this means? I already tried burning the .DMG file to a DL DVD disc and it still didn’t work.

  39. Joe

    Hi.

Thanks for the guide, its a big help. I was just wondering, if im using a External HDD for the .dmg, can I install it FROM the External ONTO my Internal (Currently has Leopard on it?) I dont know if you have mentioned this on the guide and I have missed it.

    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Michael Flux

@Joe, Yup, you can. From external to internal, from internal to external, from external to the same external etc, to OS X doesn't really matter from where to where as long as its on different partitions/drives. :)

  40. Redchicken

Great tutorial, but you don't need to shut down your mac to install Snow Leopard from an external disk!I think this is also the case when you put the dmg on a real dvd, but I can't confirm this.

I couldn't find a dual-layer dvd anywhere in my neighbourhood (I scoured more than 10 shops with no luck - in Belgium)so I had to use the external drive method.

A note to other people thinking of using an external disk to boot the dmg: just don't forget the GUID partitioning table and to use Mac Os Extended (Journaled) as the file system. Thanks for this great tutorial.

As a matter of fact, right now my mac just automatically rebooted, and continued the installation process. It's happily installing the new Operating System (and deleting a lot of stuff related to PowerPC support - byebye, 1999)

  41. Don Olliff

Trying to install to an external drive and get to the last part of restore the image to the drive. Then I get "Restore Failure - Could not validate source - not recognized" What am I doing wrong?

  42. Chu

i did as it said, but i cannot check "erase destination" box... will there be any problem? ill update as soon as possible...

  43. Kevin

Thank you for this. This tutorial was a big help!!!

  44. george

hey i have a problem....you may find it stupid...i found the software but the folder has some weard stuff that my mac can't recognise, and a zip file that i can't unzip it...any ideas???I've be trying to fix for mouths and i came out with nothing...please....
    thanks,
    george...
p.s very cool site dude....good work!!

  45. Paul

Mike, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time, and for the ways you help people.

    Like me!

    Thanks again.

I'm installing off of an iPod via USB.

After you select the drive, how long does it usually take for the installer to boot up? I've been seeing the Apple logo with the loading icon below it for a few miutes.

    Michael Flux

@Johnny P, Really all depends on the speed at which data can be read from the HD. From a DVD it usually takes no longer then a minute to boot. When I'm booting from either a USB or a Firewire HD it usually the installer boots in under 15 seconds. But yeah, it may be a bit slow when booting from the iPod as the HD in it isn't exactly designed for speedy data transfer.

    scultoree

    @Johnny P,
He man, can you tell me if it worked from the ipod? I have a tiger and want to install snow leopard, I copied the dmg to the ipod, is it just alt-restarting now and then booting from the pod?
    thanks a million

  47. Kingfer

Hi man, is it really that easy? i've tried it once but it didnt work. why is that? please reply

  48. Dlint

Hi there, so tomorrow I am going to try using the snow leopard dmg on my blank external drive... i guess the question i have is... if i do everything it says to do on this tutorial, will i need to have that external drive plugged in all the time for my computer to even work with the new os? Or after doing all of the above instructions will the OS be installed onto my internal drive so there is no need for me to have the external plugged in? And if it does install onto the internal, it would be fine to erase my external back so I can use it for other things? Am I pretty much just using the external drive as a disc since my disc drive is broken?

If I could get a response from anyone who has installed snow leopard using the external, I would love to hear back from you asap as tomorrow I am trying to try this.

    THANK YOU!!!!

  49. DAVID

    Hey Michael,
Can you help me? When I try to restore, disk utility says : could not open connection to helper tool,?
Do you know what to do??

  50. Chris

    Hey Michael,

I have burned the dmg using Toast and when I try to install the new OS from the DVD, it says to restart to begin, I do so and hold 'alt' however the only option to boot from is the HD - any suggestions? I am going from Tiger to Snow Leopard and all I did was burn the dmg file to dvd, did I miss a step??
    Thanks.

    Great site by the way...

  51. Rizal

i installed build 10A354, downloaded it fully until i notice that the final version was 10A380 (is it?). I noticed not all advertised features are in the 10A354. also now i can't update with 10.6.1, it says that the drive is not the correct one.
Is there anyway i can update 10A354 to 10A380 without having to download 6GB of data all over again for 10A380?

    please help. tks!

    Yang

@Rizal, I have the same problem. I cannot update 10.6 to 10.6.1, maybe because 10a380 is beta version of snowleopard, I guess.

  52. Dave

    Hey,

I did what all what you explained but when I click on Restore after a few seconds it writes me " could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore "

    What should I do?

    Thanks

  53. ac

@Dave, i just got that message as well. select the dmg on the left bar, then go to drop down menu>images>scan images for restore.

it will scan it and (hopefully) should work after that scan-did for me, was encountering the same issue.

    Dave

@ac, Thanks you @ac but I dont see what you mean when you say "then go to drop down menu .." can you explain me in details please
    Thank you very much

Great write up, but I am having trouble booting from my usb. I have a late 2008 Macbook Unibody. Once I press the 'alt' key it gives me the choice to boot from either the mac hd or my usb. As soon as I select my usb, the computer freezes. I installed SL by the same method on a white macbook with no problem. The unibody is giving me a hard time. Any suggestions? Something I might be doing wrong? Is it another procedure on the unibodies ? Thanks for your attention!

  56. zihzahey

    HI

It is a mazing why i couldn't burn the dmg file to a DVD + and - R DL on my Mac Book pro , with 2.5 GHZ , 2 GB Ram And 250 HD ?

@Angel, sorry just read the first comment lol.

  59. Shruggs

    Hey,

I followed the steps for burning the .DMG on a DVD+R DL 8.5gb And it wont burn.

@Michael Flux, yes it would give me an error that say's "could not burn because of Writing error" I think its my drive. So last night I moved the file to my PC and burn it from there, and still the mac drive keeps ejecting it.

  60. Andres

hey, i know how to burn and install snow leopard correctly and free.

    Shruggs

@Andres, I downloaded your video. Its great. But I don't won to keep wasting DVD's. I will give it a try if not im going to have to buy a jump drive.
    Thank You

  61. Daniel

I'v installed Snow Leopard using the partition method on the same hard drive, so now I have 2 partitions which is partition 1 for Leopard and partition 2 Snow Leopard. So the question is can I safely delete my 1st Leopard partition to gain free space or I should keep both?

    Santa Flux

@Daniel, as long as you backed up all your documents and have nothing to lose by deleting the first one then feel free to delete it. Just make sure the second one works properly.

    Anonymous

@Santa Flux, Alright, thanks for the reply, backed up everything important and ran the installation with ease but takes about 53 minutes to complete on my early white MacBook 08'.

  62. leon

The computer you are going to install Snow Leopard on MUST be setup with the GUID partitioning scheme. The external HDD can be anything as this is just booting for the install, but the actual drive in which you are installing Snow Leopard onto must be setup with the GUID partitioning scheme.

  63. Sabrina

Worked great, installed perfect... all files were still there after install.

Hey all, I have gotten the .dmg file for snow leopard and would like to know how to install it using an ipod. I am running TIGER 10.4.11. Can someone please give me directions on how to do so? The help would be much appreciated.

    HI,
Thanks for the help. I am trying upgrade from current OS 10.4.11. All is well until I try to restore the DMG to the external HD. I get the error message "An error (16) occurred while copying. (Resource busy)" I tried to "scan image for restore" first and got another error message after a few minutes of scanning. I tried carbon copy cloner as well, was able to write to the external HD, but after restarting and selecting the drive, computer just spins the freeze wheel for up to 10 minutes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  67. Bahram

    Hi Michael,

Can I upgrade a Tiger PC (Gateway Laptop) to Snow Leopard with this instructions.

    Regards,
    Bahram

    Michael Flux

@Bahram, Don't see why not as long as you find an OSx86 version of SL.

  68. Mgurica

I am curious can i do this and delete my old os x n just start over with the partition half? N i am have installer and disk utilities problems! Installer is damaged cannot install anything!!

  69. Rodrigo

Hey man its really useful what you wrote, thanks! However, I have a recurring problem when restoring the installation file into my 8gb flash drive. What happens is that after following all the steps you mentioned and clicking the restore button an error comes up saying: "An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)". I have tried everything to get around this error including mounting the .dmg file and installing the mounted file, doing all the steps again and again and yet I haven't succeeded in creating the installer flash drive. What do you think I could do to solve this problem???

We bought a new Macbook in December. The hard drive crashed in February. Since I live in Russia (the macbook was brought from the states.) I decided to just buy a new hard drive, install it and reinstall Snow Lepard. (I thought this would be better and faster than mailing the comp back to the states for repair. Didn't know I needed a dmg file. So, what should I do now? Kevin

I have an older macbook and bought the new snow lepard for it. Could I just use that disk to get the dmg? Kevin

Thank you!!!! Can't wait to throw logic 9 on it.

  74. Jeremy

Using an 8GB SD card and got it partitioned.
When trying to restore I got this message.

"Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore"

  75. Jeremy

Since I have a GUID partitioned drive, can I just drag and drop the iso on it?
    (what I am doing now)
Do I have to restore from the Disk Utility?

  76. Jeremy

I am stupid of course I have to restore the dmg file. Figured out that I had to choose the sd from the left column the disk utility. From the images menu select scan for restore. Then went ahead and restored like the tutorial said. BIG THANKS!

  77. Jeremy

    Sorry for all the posts.
I am stumped. Got the disk restored on the GUID drive. But I am not able to boot from it.

I go to preferences. Startup disk and choose the OSX install disk but my macbook just boots up like normal. (maybe a bit slower)

I try to install by double clicking the CD. Installation starts. But about 5 min in my computer restarts. And then boots back into 10.5.8.....
    Any ideas?

    i have an external disc
but it is full of my backed up files
    i can't format it.

Will it work if i partition it ,specifically

where it says volume scheme to select 2 or 3 partitions ,then press split and
    then select guid?

  81. James Smith João Pessoa, Brazil

This is a really well done explanation. Appropriate screen shots, easy to understand instructions with only one small error. (It's the Option key to hold down)

The only problem is, it doesn't seem to work when installing on a thumb drive. I followed all the formatting instructions and installed the OSX install DMG on the thumb drive with plenty of space (64 GB) That all went as described. But, when I try to restart, it never shows that drive. I can see it in the finder and I can select the install OSX file. That seems to work as it asks if I want to restart. But, it always restarts from the internal drive and not from the thumb drive where the installer is located. Holding down the option key doesn't work then, either.

So, what am I doing wrong? Could it be because I am trying to install OSX 10.4? I am refurbishing G4 PowerBooks and want to have a fresh install of the OS so I can specify Portuguese as the main language. So maybe the procedure of 10.4.n is different?

hello michael flux, in the last step it takes ages for the file to restore on my 8gb usb-stick. is this normal?

  83. Drew

    Hi Michael Flux
Can you please how to install the OSX on a (flash or external) hardrive with Windows 7?
Is it as simple as just dragging/copying or does it need to be installed on the drive itself?
    Thank you for your time,

    Hey all,
I've followed the steps to get my dmg file onto a USB drive, the computer is able to boot from the USB, but then after going through the 30 minutes of install, I get a message saying that OSX cannot be installed on this computer. Does this mean that the file is corrupt? Or is there a step I´ve overlooked?
    Thanks much!

Hey! I have a quick question. I have been using my external hard drive as my main for a while on my desktop. I wiped my computer recently and it seems that my computer stopped recognizing the existence of my external hard drive, so I can't even use my desktop now. I'm on my husband's laptop and I have the Mac OS X install CDs. Is there a way that I can install these onto the external if I want to use it as the main drive on my desktop? I would use the method you describe above, but there are two CDs... so will this still work? Do I just have to repeat the process with the second CD to complete the installation?
