Around the neighborhood 17 01

Let us start this photo walk not with a road, but rather with a cup of noodles. Mmmmmm noodles. Seriously, in the time I was in Japan, I ate a thousand times more noodles then did in my entire life prior to that. Mmmm mmm mmm, delicious noodles. And plus for the price that these cost, something like 200 yen if not mistaken, it fills you up way way more then anything you can get from say, McDonalds for the same price. I just don't get all those college students who are constantly whining "boo hoo hoo I'm a poor college student who has to eat noodles all day!" Whiny whiny whiny! :p

Around the neighborhood 17 02

As I was coming back from the store with the noodles, also saw this crap in one vending machine, so I decided to try it. Tasted like well, crap. If you want coffee from vending machines, the Suntory Boss coffee is infinitely better then this. Bleh!

Around the neighborhood 17 03

Once again, passing by the Toyota showroom on my way towards the city.

Around the neighborhood 17 04

The very tiny, somewhat cute, and quite old (early to mid 90s) Honda Today.

Around the neighborhood 17 05

A weird looking fountain-like thingamajig. With someone's trash waiting to be collected behind it.

Around the neighborhood 17 06

Then wondering alongside a bunch of train tracks.

Around the neighborhood 17 07

Yet another random apartment building.

Around the neighborhood 17 08

Then I find a bridge! Naturally, I head towards it.

The bridge from the photo above. Do zoom in/out and move around the map to see the surrounding area with all the train tracks.

Around the neighborhood 17 09

Some trains just standing there, waiting for something.

Around the neighborhood 17 10

So much rust everywhere surrounding the tracks.

Around the neighborhood 17 11

Seems like this part of the track is made in such a way that allows access to the trains from the bottom. Probably mostly just for inspections as it doesn't look there is any space to do any major repairs.

Around the neighborhood 17 12

Stood there for a minute or two wondering about what this thing was... then I realized... Its a freakin' train wash!

Around the neighborhood 17 13

A train or two passing by under the bridge.

Around the neighborhood 17 14

On the other side of the bridge, an entrance to the highway.

Around the neighborhood 17 15

The Nagoya "skyline" if you want to call it that. The skyscrapers are all very cool looking, but I just wish there was 5x more of them.

Around the neighborhood 17 16

A train flies by as I'm leaving the bridge.

Around the neighborhood 17 17

What I find really interesting is just how many houses in Japan still have the 'traditional' roofs, especially interesting seeing how they contrast with the shiny skyscrapers in the background.

Around the neighborhood 17 18

Some very very rusty roof.

Around the neighborhood 17 19

Passing by yet another random apartment building. Clothes is just hang out to dry - a bit of a wild concept in US where literally everyone, including both the people who live in apartment and in homes, uses a dryer. In Japan it seems like everyone, no matter how rich just hangs their clothes to dry.

Sometimes you see a house which looks like it cost a fortune (if not multiple fortunes), then 2-3 very expensive cars parked to it and yet the clothes are still handing out on a balcony. Now, with that said obviously you can still buy a dryer, and plenty of washing machines even have them built right in, but still, most people seem to prefer to let the wind and the sun dry everything.

Around the neighborhood 17 20

The very body and weird looking, Honda HR-V. Plus another train flying by in the background.

Around the neighborhood 17 21

The back is just as weird and the spoiler on the roof just cracks me up. Not sure what is it about this car, but I think it looks more like a surfboard then a car.

Around the neighborhood 17 22

The darker car under the roof is a Mitsubishi Evo X - this was actually the first time I saw one in the wild. Must say it looks alot better in person then in pictures. Though I still much prefer the 8th and 9th generations, just look way 'cooler' if nothing else.

Around the neighborhood 17 23

Around the neighborhood 17 24

Another cool looking house.

Around the neighborhood 17 25

And yet another one of the infinite number of small shrines which are located everywhere.

Around the neighborhood 17 26

Hmm, haven't posted any photos of leaves in a while, so here, a leaf.

Around the neighborhood 17 27

And as I'm passing by a kindergarden place...

Around the neighborhood 17 28

...I see another leaf.

Around the neighborhood 17 29

Something else I find interesting... People just put out plants in pots in front of their house and/or apartment onto the road. When all the flowers are blooming, quite nice seeing all the streets covered in flowers. Something tells if you were to do something like this in the US, either a) someone would run over that pot, b) someone would break that pot, or c) someone would piss in that pot. Oh sigh! :p

Something else tells me I used the word 'interesting' at least a thousand times by now. I probably need to expand my vocabulary to stop sounding so repetitive, no?

Around the neighborhood 17 30

Finally, let us end this photowalk (or at least this part of it) with this wonderful view. :)

I'm sat at work and those noodles made me really hungry, absolutely love noodles going to try every variety in Japan ^^

Don't know about Honda today more like Honda yesterday.

Yes the Honda-HRV looks horrid, and in complete relation to that when are you going to put up some tips on taking photo's of leafs wise leaf warrior?

Not sure what it is about the last photo but think it looks great.

    Michael Flux

@Tibul, Well, its the today, of 15+ years ago :p

And I'm confused :p What kind of tips are you looking for? :p

    Tibul

@Michael Flux, no idea they just seem to come out better than the ones I take :P

    Michael Flux

@Tibul, Hmm... practice practice practice? Also being friends withe gods of Sun and aperture doesn't hurt either :p

  2. Tomakun

Cool set, makes me want to go to Nagoya. Quite fast in Shinkansen from where I live. Thanks for sharing.

    Michael Flux

@Tomakun, Hmm? What city do you live in?

  3. Moign Khawaja

The noodles in the bowl tempted me so much that now I've to ask you to compile a collection of 'oishii' (delicious) japanese food. Any chance yer readers can get their eyes on something mouth watering? :P

    Michael Flux

@Moign Khawaja, Heh, sure, as soon as I go back to Japan, will do nothing except take photos of food :p

  4. Jambe

Excellent photo of the Koya Bridge! Have you ever considered uploading your photos to Panoramio (http://www.panoramio.com/) so people can see them if they're looking at that location in Google Maps or Google Earth?

    Michael Flux

@Jambe, Yeah, was thinking about that, but am not entirely sure when I'll get around to doing it given how much time it takes to go though all the photos and remember the specific locations of where each one was taken :p

Maybe when I have some more free time :p

  5. yonasu

I can't cook and I love noodles, and I never get bored of them! Oh and I wish we had canned coffee here in Sweden, we used to have it a few years ago but nowadays I've only found canned latte, which tasted more like milk than coffee =/

    Michael Flux

@yonasu, I did try some of those lattes and meh, just a bit way too sweet for my taste... can't really say I liked them too much.

And come on, cooking isn't THAT hard :p

  6. Pat

Ramen... if you don't die from malnutrition, you'll die from MSG overdose.

    Michael Flux

@Pat, But what a tasty way to go!!!

  7. Santa

The noodles do look very tempting. But the major contast in the buildings is amazing, I love how there are old fashioned ones by all the nice newer ones.

Oh also: " In Japan it seems like everyone, no matter how rich just hands their clothes to dry." Don't you mean 'hangs'? :P

    Michael Flux

@Santa, Ah yes, oops, thanks for that, corrected now ^_^

  8. MC

I like the pictures. Way different from Texas. What do you recommend to do while visiting Nagoya?

    Michael Flux

@MC, Hmm... you know, I don't know... really not that much touristy stuff to do in Nagoya to be honest... I mean yeah, you can visit the Nagoya Castle, the Toyota Museum, a few other things here and there... but I think if you're looking to be walking around in awe, I think Tokyo would be a much better place to go. Nagoya is just like a relatively calm and quiet off-the-tourist-map location :p
