Around the neighborhood 3
Mar 22 2009 00:36 | 50 Comments
Continuing on with the random walks around the neighborhood where I lived for 3 month. Like in the last photo walk post, a mix of factories, office building, residential buildings - houses, apartments, condos etc...
By far one of my favorite things that I noticed were the absence of garages in Japan. Here, in Michigan, and in US in general, when someone has a house, its very rare that they don’t have a garage - be it attached to the house or separate, it’s still a “garage” with walls on all sides, a roof etc.
In Japan I not once saw them. Next to all houses you see these cool looking curved (plastic?) transparent roofs. Sometimes, very rarely you see roofs instead of a traditional garage in the States, but usually its just the boring flat rectangle on 4 polls - nowhere near as great looking at these. During the summer people also hang up their clothes under the roof - clothes dries as the sunlight gets though and if it starts raining the clothes stay dry.
Turns out in Japan dog turds are made of shiny gold.
More small gardens between houses.
Love the traditional Japanese roofs and these bonsai-like (except large) trees next to many houses.
A small crop harvester in a small field.
And from another side.
As mentioned in a previous post, when a house is facing one of these small canals, you get the joy of owning a bridge. As you can see the bridge is the only way to enter the house. Cars are parked on the bridge.
First time I saw a mantis in person. As it was already getting cold (around mid November), this one was barely moving. Carried him to the bushes so someone didn’t run him over. Do you “rescue” insects when they find a way into your home?
Some berries.
Also first time I saw growing bamboo. Obviously I saw those tiny bamboos for home use, but this was the first time I saw forests of it.
As I said before, literally everyone in Japan has a bike. No matter how much money they make, or where they live. A bike is still one of the primary modes of transportation. Take this house for example - no real clue how much it costs, but I would guess 30-40 million Yen (guessing off top of my head). Two rather expensive Mercedes in the garage-like structure, standing right next to a few bikes.

>In Japan I not once saw them.
You weren`t looking close enough. :D
They`re not nearly as popular as the curved roofs, because of building permissions and the like... But there are two even on the little road to the grocery store.

>You weren`t looking close enough. :D
May be, but my point still stands. Compared to the transparent roofs, barely any of those :)

when you went to japan, did u know japanese or not?
Carlos
Hello I like your pictures! I have been in Nagoya 4 times and i also like that City. It is a very different Japanese City if you compare it with the others. Well, I think that "bonsai" tree's name is "matsu"
Michael Flux
@julio
Nope. Other then the bare minimum that I studied on my own, none at all whatsoever.
@Carlos, now that you mention it, yes, seems to be one of the names for it ^_^

you're so kind to rescue insects/animals ^^;
Moign Khawaja
Strange they write "sutoppo" (Stop in English) in Katakana. So surprised to read it!
I go out for a bike ride every evening (weather permits) and see loads of snails and other insects on the ground. I try my level best not to run them over... But I do make an effort to save every living being. I know it sounds so hypocritical when you are a predator... But eating veggies all the time is not possible man. Plants are living beings too...don't you think so?
Michael Flux
@Moign Khawaja, Heh yeah, but I guess if you don't eat anything you'll just drop dead yourself sadly. And like while I can't say I don't eat meat - though I do try to eat other things when I can - when I do eat meat I prefer it to be so processed that I don't even know what or where it came from, ignorance is bliss I guess.
And yeah, nice to finally meet someone who too saves the insects, not too much people like this out there, most just kill anything that gets in their way without thinking twice. ^_^

Every one on internet searches for really good content. Its very unfortunate with most of the websites published posts that are boring and out of context articles, just to show that new material is being published. Contrary to that immoral practice, this article is a really good-written article.
you will put your site on my blogroll.
